Get in touch – preparing OI kids for surgery

Dr. Argerie Tsimicalis (RN, PhD, Nurse Scientist at Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada) and Ms. Jenny Wang (RN, M.Ed., PhD Candidate at McGill University) are looking for participants to help co-design an educational virtual reality (VR) game for children with OI!

We are conducting an exciting new study to create a Virtual Reality (VR) tool to help children with OI prepare for surgery. Virtual reality is a computer-generated world that you can look and move around in as if you were actually there. Children can play games, interact with digital objects, and be immersed in a digital world.

We know that surgery can be extremely stressful, but VR can help by showing and explaining what to expect in the hospital. We want to build an educational VR game for children with OI to help them learn about their surgeries and decrease anxiety.

By participating, your voice will help shape this innovative tool. We are looking for people to join our VR Council, where you’ll work with the research team to give input, test prototypes, and develop the VR tool from beginning to end.

Who can participate?

• Children with OI ages 5-17 years
• Parents, siblings, and caregivers of children with OI
• Healthcare providers (e.g., physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, allied health professionals) working with pediatric OI patients
• Childhood educators, specialists, and researchers
• Software and game developers
