ADVOCACY

OIFE at ECTS

From May 23 – 26 we were three people who represented OIFE in Innsbruck, Austria for the 52nd ECTS 2025 Congress: Ingunn Westerheim, Inger-Margrethe S. Paulsen and Alessandra Tolaccia.

On May 23, we were excited to contribute to a very interesting session called “Lifelong needs in the care for and follow-up of adults with OI” at the European Calcified Tissue Society – ECTS conference in Innsbruck. Lots of interesting talks from European OI-professionals and Ingunn, who provided the patient perspective.

Conclusions are that guidelines are important, but we need to do a lot of work to gather more evidence beforehand. When guidelines are in place, we also need to work closely together to spread awareness, so that specialists who do not know a lot of OI can learn enough to provide better care for adults with OI. We also met some familiar faces in the breaks.

On Friday night in Innsbruck we enjoyed a nice dinner with the Nordic OI professionals. Saturday and Sunday brought interesting talks and networking opportunities. We learned about osteoarthritis, joint surgery and exercise and bone. We heard award winner Emma Duncan and advisory board member Geert Mortier talk about rare bone conditions and met the researchers behind the new mouse model for OI type 1 (photo on the right).

The conference also brought good opportunities both at the conference, but also at the dinners with the Nordic adult OI doctors and the Norwegian OI professionals (photo on the left).
